Why detail photos carry more weight than people expect
Every wedding I shoot has a stack of small objects that never make it into the ceremony or reception photos, but they end up being some of my favorite images in the whole gallery. Your wedding detail photos are the quiet part of the story, the objects that took months of planning and thought, photographed before anyone puts them on or the day gets busy.

The rings and whatever holds them
Bring both rings, even if only one person is getting a band that day. I like photographing engagement rings next to the wedding bands, stacked in the box they came in or resting on something with texture, a piece of lace, a wood tray, whatever feels like you.

The invitation suite your whole paper story
If you had invitations printed, bring the full suite, not the invitation card alone. The envelope, the inner envelope if there is one, the reply card, any wax seal or ribbon, and your save the date all tell a fuller story together than any single piece on its own.
Menus, programs, and vow books count too. If your calligrapher did something special with the envelope, I want to see it before it gets tucked away in a drawer.

Shoes are an easy one to forget in the morning rush, but they photograph beautifully, especially with a bit of natural light near a window. If both partners are getting ready nearby, I like shooting the shoes together, it says something about the day without a single word.

- Garter or veil, if you are wearing one
Perfume or cologne the scent nobody photographs but everyone remembers
You cannot photograph a smell, but you can photograph the bottle, and years from now that bottle will trigger the memory of the whole day in a way a candid shot never will. If you are wearing a scent your mom wore on her wedding day, or one that was a gift from your partner, tell me. That is exactly the kind of detail worth a few extra minutes.
Heirlooms the pieces with a story behind them
A grandmother's brooch, a dad's watch, a handkerchief someone carried at their own wedding, a coin from another country, a rosary. These are the objects that make a gallery feel like yours and nobody else's. I always ask about them ahead of time because the story matters as much as the object itself.
The best detail photos are rarely the prettiest objects in the room. They are the ones with a story behind them.
How to pack it one simple box beats five scattered bags
Put everything in one small box or bag the night before, labeled if more than one person is getting ready. Hand it to me, a parent, or your planner when I arrive in the morning so we are not hunting for a ring box while hair and makeup is finishing up.
